I was referring to your comments re. SS and Medicare, not Vietnam.

You mean when you said "I thought we were talking about the war in Iraq", you where wondering why I was talking about SS and Medicare rather then Iraq?

If you follow this conversation back you will see we are talking about spending. That includes all forms of federal government spending but the conversation has focused on defense, and SS, and Medicare.

After the boomers, any growth in SS payments will be offset by payments into the fund.

Only if the average life expectancy stops going up, or if the retirement age is indexed to life expectancy, neither of which is currently planned.
