Depends on which 'Europeans' you are talking about... several have moved to flat tax systems with great results.

I also think that a combination of BOTH our complex, corrupted income tax system with a 'consumption' or VAT would be the worst of all outcomes --- terrible for restraining the growth of federal spending.
