Heard a talk Saturday about Quanah Parker, the last of the Comanche Chiefs....He taught himself to both read and write...and he spoke and wrote beautifully. A family member has two letters that have been handed down in her family....and we heard and saw the copies.

He didn't have a school, or even very many pieces of papers and pencils.

The kids AND their teachers should know about this very famous Native American. Perhaps it would give them a little incentive to do their job...learning.

Wish I could have known this man!

There is much about him on Google and other search engines...

Parker, Quanah

Plains warrior : Chief Quanah Parker and the Comanches / Albert Marrin. New York : Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 1996. Tells of the life of the last great Comanche war chief and of how he became well known as the leader who helped his people survive in a white man’s world. 200 p. RL YA

The fact that it's controversial to require students to speak, read and write English before graduating from high school shows just how dysfunctional our education system has become.
