The only statement I really made about my own position was something along the lines of "a government that for years or decades worsens the lives of its population and resists diplomatic efforts for reform probably should be removed by force."

With specific regard to Iraq, it's far from clear that this worsening of the lives of the population did not take place without contribution from the West, and particularly America. The hawkish dual use rules of the "UN" imposed sanctions caused many to die in Iraq...with particular toll on the young. How do you suppose did the economy of Iraq go from equaling that of Spain to being a tiny fraction thereof. And now we learn tragically that the dual use paranoia, strongly backed and motivated by US influence on the UN (and opposed by the Europeans), was for WMDs that had not existed for 12 years. The time to intervene (for the world) was when Iraq and Iran were at war, and when Saddam was putting down the Kurd, Shia revolts of 1991. We know of course that it was in the west's interest to abet that first conflict, and of course we only paid lip service during the revolt. It disgusts me to listen to right wingers now when they say that the UN is hapless, when its actions on Iraq (and elsewhere) have been, until 2003 anyway, dominated by US intervention and influence. It is what it is because we made it so.

The road to international self righteousness is a slippery one.
