They will passively support current subscribers

More than that. The NDS news is a year old now, and DirecTV added over 400,000 tivo customers last quarter alone. There is no evidence they are dropping Tivo altogether - so far there aren't any alternatives even. They don't seem to be worrying about giving NDS an exclusive either, given that they just signed on Humax to make DVRs for them as well.

Tivo at DirecTv will simply die a slow death

Emphasize the word "slow." Right now, sales continue to accelerate. They're not on the far side of the growth curve, headed down the slope. So far, they're still headed up. That contract runs through 2007 and I don't think they're about to cut off their two million directivo subs or spend money to replace their hardware when those subs are all low-churn and profitable. Never mind the cost of swapping out the directivos - if just a couple customers in a hundred bolt during the swap, Directv loses. I don't think they'll go there. Though they believe that posturing will drive a better bargain with Tivo down the road IMO.
