Syria is contributing to the instability by supporting Hezbollah and has been in Lebanon for a longer time than we have been in Iraq.

The Syrians came in to control Lebanon, partially through occupation of sections of the country and partially though supporting groups like Hezbollah and leaning on the government. They act like a mafia and extract money for Syrian officals and the Syrian inteligence service.

The US went to Iraq to kick out the Baathists, now we want to stabilize the situation and greatly reduce our presence, but we have to help Iraq develop a non-Baathist army. The only real restrictions on the new government imposed by the US will be that it not develop WMD and that it not invade its neighbors.

To sum up American troops in Iraq, at least for now, increase Iraqi security, Syrian troops in Lebanon undermine lasting security and Lebanese self determination.
