I think you have to have some experience of Northern Ireland to understand that world. The Catholics have been the underdogs for such a long time, and in terms of their civil and human rights I am totally on their side.

Finally they had their (violent) revolution, of sorts, and it was seemingly successful! Everyone was so happy. We were relieved, because we would like to live there at least part of the year. But unlike some socialist revolutionaries whose campaigns were successful, they somehow did not make an orderly transition to political power.

So many people love Gerry Adams--Bill Clinton among them. I admired him hugely. But they thought they could get away with having a political arm above ground and still being the IRA at the same time. I don't know if it is true that the really big bank robbery was to establish a pension fund for aging IRA guys, or even that they did, indeed, rob that bank. But just the issue of offering to murder the people involved in the stabbing instead of bring them to justice means they still are thinking outside the law, so a power sharing government does not make sense right now.

I am just reeling from how badly they have failed. I don't understand it. They were about to have everything they ever wanted. The only thing I can think is that killing people for political reasons really does turn people into just cold-blooded killers sometimes. And it attracts other cold-blooded killers who have very little interest in the political struggle.
