Looking at the expression "proud to be American," I think it necessarily implies that the speaker is proud to be an American as compared to any other nationality.

For example, he is proud to be American as compared to Swedish.

My question is: Why? WTF has he got against the Swedes? Has he ever been a Swedish citizen? If not, how does he know he wouldn't be just as proud to be a Swede as compared to being an American?

Would his life feel empty if he had been born a Swede, or an Irishman, or a Canadian?
