What do you think the expression means? Generally when I have been proud of something in my life, it has been due to some sort of an accomplishment (leading the league in batting average, etc.).

The "proud to be American" expression, on the other hand, doesn't rely on any particular accomplishment on behalf of the speaker. Most of us are Americans by birth ... it's not like becoming American was any kind of accomplishment.

Are you proud to be an American? I never have been. To me being American has always just been part of my condition, like having black hair and being 5'10" tall ... really I haven't had anymore control over being an American than I have my physical attributes, it is hardly feasible for me to become Danish while having spent my entire life in the U.S.
