In all seriousness, I can't really imagine myself proclaiming that I'm "proud to be an American" just out of the blue. Often, I think, it is said in response to expressions of anti-American sentiment. In other words, it's a response to an implied question "aren't you ashamed to be an American?". Sometimes, however, one might think it - or perhaps even say it - when one sees his countrymen doing something particularly noble or accomplishing something great. In other words, out of genuine pride in the most positive sense, rather than the defensive one above.

Does it offend you when people take pride in their country, their countrymen, their leadership or the principles their country stands for? Why? Do you just not like it when people feel good? Do they have to have some underlying negative motivation or sentiment they are attempting to conceal? Why are you such a negative person? Have you been hanging out with X again? ;-)
