Are you proud to be an American? I never have been.

I'm sure I've never asserted "I'm proud to be an American" and doubt that I ever will. It's just not something that I would have reason to say. If that's what you mean by "I never have been," then I agree with you. Having said that, I'm not ashamed of being an American, either. I just am one. Asserting pride in being an American is probably code for something. Perhaps someone hereabouts who is part of that in-crowd will tell us what the code means. It probably means the same thing as flying the flag, whatever that means. I don't do that, either. I find conspicuous displays of patriotism a bit off-putting, a kind of putting on of airs. I never wore jeans with a designer logo on my butt, either. But that's just me. I don't mind others waving flags or advertizing consumer goods; it's just not my style.

Rather than being proud to be an American I feel fortunate to be one. My grandparents emigrated a century ago. I could have grown up in communist Czechoslovakia like the offspring of their siblings. I feel very fortunate that that was not my lot. My grandparents not only left that place, then chose this one. What a deal!

You asked about "I love my country." I do, indeed, love my country. It all came together here courtesy of our founders. I have enormous love and respect for them and what they accomplished. It was a singular advancement of humankind. Not that those who came after haven't done and aren't still doing many things to screw it up, but the kernel is still unique and golden. My sense of patriotism is in cherishing and defending that kernel.
