Yes, I saw that after I posted.

I understand the defensive usage, although I have never run into the question, "Aren't you ashamed...?". I imagine my response to that would be "No. Why do you think I should be?" rather than "I'm proud..."

Sometimes, however, one might think it - or perhaps even say it - when one sees his countrymen doing something particularly noble or accomplishing something great.

I have more trouble relating to this. I think that Lance Armstrong's accomplishments are marvelous but I can't imagine why I should take pride in them. The pride belongs to him and those who contributed to him. I had no role.
