"I have more trouble relating to this. I think that Lance Armstrong's accomplishments are marvelous but I can't imagine why I should take pride in them."

I was thinking more along the lines of an outpouring of public support for victims of disaster or liberating France from the Nazis. But why does taking pride in something necessarily depend on that something being one's own accomplishment? I'm proud of my son when he aces a science test even though he did it himself. All I did was contribute genes and encourage his curiosity. Pride is not limited to oneself. In fact, many would say excessive pride in oneself is unhealthy, but then we're getting into a slightly different meaning of the word "pride."
