The imbalance game is not lacking in social principle. I believe it is a natural human desire to help others, to create 'haves' from 'have nots', to share in the bounty of life. Many deny this desire, having been taught that social Darwinism is more important; that only the strong survive, that the weak are weak because they refuse to help themselves.

As a practical matter, power in an equilibrium produces a steadier state than an imbalance. The demise of the USSR has produced an imbalance, one that we've recently fought to maintain. We fight the natural forces pushing towards an equilibrium, and it is draining us and creating greater force that attempting to push back to the equilibrium.

Standing on principle can easily be mistaken for a unilateral attack to maintain the imbalance. Principles must include not only the end point, but all points along the path.
