Already Folke Bernadotte understood that no lasting peace could ever be between the an Arab state and Israel in what was then called Palestine with either the Arabs or Israel controlling Jerusalem. His idea was to go ahead with a peace plan initially excluding the Jerusalem question and next head for declaring Jerusalem an open city under international control with equal access for everybody.

Both sides hated him and Igun killed him for that.

But in all reality I believe he was right and unless a solution like this is eventually forced upon the all of the parties one day, lasting peace in the area is quite hard to imagine.
