Ray Sawyer of Dr. Hook told me how Shel might deliver a song. "Shel called us up at four in the morning from a phone booth. He had a guitar in there with him and he said, 'Listen, I've just written a song and I want you to take it down before I forget it.' I don't know why he hadn't got a pen and paper with him, but you don't ask Shel things like that. I took the song down in an old address book and it was 'The Cover of the Rolling Stone'."

Fascinating guy.
