Saddam could have produced a peaceful resolution to the 1990's conflict by resigning - what's your reply?

My reply is that's intransigence. It is not the right of the US to demand that the leader of another country step down....even one as distasteful as Saddam. The world would (and did not) stand for that for very good reasons.

I still don't understand you. You made a point (I believe) that there was NOTHING Saddam could have done to prevent Iraq war 2. I think there were plenty of things he could have done to prevent Iraq War 2, and the most obvious (and first that came to my mind) was resign. He could have accepted political asylum in a friendly country, same as Liberia's Charles Taylor is doing in Nigeria today. Ba da bing - no Iraq war 2!

I never said the US had the right to demand Saddam stand down. I'm just saying there are things he could have done to stop Iraq war 2. If Saddam's interest was doing what's best for Iraq, he could have prevented the 2nd war.

I understand...but that's a pretty sweeping generalization and a long way from an invasion,

?? What's the sweeping generalization? What's a long way from an invasion? Sorry, I can't understand what you are trying to say.
