I think American support for the hideous IRA was in part because Americans have a legacy mindset that "the British are coming" and there's a war to be fought against them.

It's the legacy of our large Irish population that came over hating the Brits, and our natural sympathy for the underdog, which is what the IRA is perceived to be. A "rebels against the evil empire," outlook.
