I can’t think how it could have possibly happened that they managed to fire that many rounds at a car carrying Italian intelligence officers and a journalist (usually they save those rounds for Iraqi families in cars).

If they did fire hundreds of rounds at the car the car would have probably been swiss cheese and everyone in it probably would have been killed.

“The soldiers who almost killed the journalist were really, really frightened. They’ve been under lots of pressure.” But see, Iraqis are frightened and under pressure too- we don’t go around accidentally killing people. We’re expected to be very level-headed and sane in the face of chaos.

If the Americans at the scene are not lying about the situation then their actions where level-headed and sane. If the car would not slow down after visual and verbal warnings and warning shots, than the Americans had reason to thin that their life was in danger. Shooting the car in that situation was standard procedure and was a reasonable action.
