You and I are not without blame.
Agreed.

He used to be civil towards me. Lately he has not demonstrated the desire.
It has become a disease on SI in the last 5 years. Pick almost any thread, even GWB, and contrast now and say, 1998. Usually there's a tremendous change. Part was the crash. Part was the 2000 election. Part was the Iraq War. Part was the 2004 election. But there has been a large decrease in civility in general. Too many people have become too tightly wound around what has happened, halfway one way, half the other. The result has been threads with large ban lists and unmoderated threads that are war zones. There are people who stay entirely inside the threads on their side of the fence.

Would we treat family, coworkers, friends (that we wished to keep) customers, etc. the way we behave on SI? We can all be gotten to outside of SI; our identities are available no matter what anonymity we think we have. A friend was threatened in his home life as a result of differences of opinions on SI. I may not be the most courteous, but I strive to maintain a modicum of civility.
The internet gives a degree of anonymity. Sitting at a keyboard typing in words is quite different from facing a person and saying those same words to them. This was noted on the old internet long before the web. What kept things under control then was the admins at the backbone sites. There were few of those and if they killed your account you were done. Now at worst your account on SI is terminated.

But, yeah, anyone can be found in 3D. Anyone, if someone is willing to put the time and effort into it.
