"Why don't they realize that once America makes a case for something, the Middle East will go in the opposite direction?" said an Arab diplomat

Uh huh. And this "Arab diplomat" predicted the opposition protests, right? and he's really a democrat, right?

I'm sick of anonymous spokesmen for autocrats being treated as the final word on the subject.

Hizbullah is obviously strong, well funded (est. $100 million a year from Tehran) and dangerous. As the New York Times never manages to inform us, they are also genocidal fanatics. Their TV station doesn't just proclaim its desire to destroy Israel, they also want to wipe the Jews off the face of the earth.

However, the Bush administration may be taking a 'one step at a time' approach. If Syria is actually dislodged, Hizbullah's position will be more anamolous and isolated in an otherwise sovereign Lebanon than it is now in a Syrian protectorate.

Afterthought: If Hizbullah does feel itself isolated, expect it to provoke a small war with Israel, whether by terrorism or just by shelling Israel, using one of its 10,000 rockets lined up by the border.
