Americans are or at least have been different. That is why I don't like to see the big new cash enlistment and reenlistment bonuses. To me they are an admission that we have failed our youth. Recruiters today are out there selling a free education and offering cash to buy a free car to boot. Like it or not, admit it or not, we are now building a mercenary Army. That is not good for America. Mercenary armies are described in several historical books about the rise and fall of previous empires. If you understand history, you realize we are not only failing our youth, we are also failing our own values. In the French case it is not funny today. With an 11% and rapidly expanding Muslim population...France is in big trouble. Napoleon would be screaming if he saw what is about to happen to France. uw
