>>It will be interesting in the coming months and years which company Sony or Apple can generate more brand recognition.<<

Don -

Both Apple and Sony already have very widespread brand recognition. However, I believe Apple is generally accepted as having one of the most recognized brands in the world.

Apple has already generated massive awareness of the iPod. You see its name in comic strips, and you hear jokes about it on late-night talk shows and in sitcoms. It's the preferred premium for all kinds of promotions (Citibank is giving them away currently). What remains to be seen is whether Sony can generate the kind of brand awareness that Apple already has.

This is not a competition in which the players are starting off even. Sony has a LOT of catching up to do.

I'm not saying that Sony isn't a competitive threat. I'm just saying that as far as branding for this kind of a product goes, Apple has done it in spades, and Sony hasn't even begun.
