Somebody was asking how it ends. I can't find my copy. Can you remember?

I believe the main character, the guy who comes down out of the mountains to find everyone (or almost everyone) dead dies. This is after the kids take to beating him thinking he is a shaman and knows where the game is but won't tell them.
