You are right. USAF is actually 366,991 currently.

This chart has the latest figures. The January figures were just released. Notice the substantial decrease in Navy and USAF personnel for the last 7-8 months.

Both services are blowing smoke about meeting enlistment goals. They are not replenishing themselves...they are simply reducing strength to their authorized figure.

This link confirms actual end strengths for FY 2005. Scroll to SEC 403 for the additional Army and USMC authority.

thomas.loc.gov;

Here is some more smoke to ponder.
The Army is maintaining its current level by locking in tens of thousands of soldiers who are otherwise eligible for discharge or retirement right now. The actual number locked has not been released but I know it includes close to 50% of our Green Berets.

Congress recently passed a bill that takes active duty reservists and National Guard folks off the count. Prior to that bill, they were counted against service active duty end strength.

I believe we have a very real enlistment crisis that is being managed by Congress and DOD using smoke and mirrors to hide the problem. I also know, so far, I am a minority of one here, so I'll just keep posting the numbers and let everyone decide for themselves.
