I read that in Sweden 90% of new construction incorporates geothermal. Some geothermal systems are so efficient that they save 70% of the energy compared to oil/gas furnances, and therefore the payback time is rather short if you are heating/cooling a decent sized structure.

I imagine geothermal will become more popular in coming years as oil/natural gas go up in price. Right now, geothermal systems are still rather pricey. I looked into it, and they said for a typical 2 bedroom 1,800 sq ft house, a geothermal system would cost about $18,000. State rebates would reduce the cost by about $2,000. If it costs you $300.00 per month to heat and cool such a unit, then you'd save about $200.00 per month in heating/cooling expenses and the system could pay for itself in 7 years. But, if oil/natural gas prices go up that payback time will be accelerated.

I hadn't realized how far along geothermal technology had come. Another aspect of alt.energy that is making incredible progress. Sweden has proven that it can work in real world applications.
