Well, you may be right that drafting people and refusing to let them leave is a better way to win their hearts and minds. I think you're wrong, but there's only one way to find out, and that's to try it.

I am going by the people I know around here who have been in the military. They all seem to have been motivated, in large part, by self-interest, by the income and the benefits, especially the health benefits and retirement benefits. The double-dippers around here are rolling in dough.

Idealism is a wonderful thing but it doesn't pay the bills. Very few people retain idealism past their youth, not coincidentally about the time they want to get married, have kids, buy houses, and start wishing they had enough money for the above.

It's also no coincidence that the other large cadre of idealists and volunteers are the middle aged (and older) who have time and resources to devote to giving back to the community.
