The Italian agent who survived says it did not happen the way the Americans are depicting it.

My best hunch is the Americans thought they did the right thing given the situation (speeding car which doesn't stop in response to a few warning signals) and the Italians thought they did the right thing given the situation (we weren't speeding, and didn't see any signals), and that's how you get a terrible, terrible accident.

The Italian agent said that they were not speeding and were given no warning. The Italian journalist said essentially the same thing. In the meantime, the US Army knew that they were coming to the airport with the Italian journalist.
