This is an important development, particularly when the NY Times this morning was speaking of Hezbollah as a "political reality" and part of a democratic force that the US would be forced to accept. Yes, it is surprising too, coming from the EU. BTW, I regard the NYT article as another of its reporter speculations gussied up as news. What is going on in the Bush administration, I suspect, is that they are willing to take a one step at a time approach to Lebanon. If Syria is actually forced out, Hizbullah will be in a weaker and more anamolous position than it is now in a Syrian protectorate.
