I'm a little surprised you posted this article. The island may or may not have had that much strategic value but the battle is remembered for the valor and courage our troops showed.

I have coffee with a veteran of Iwo Jima who enlisted at 14, big kid, because he had two older brothers killed by the Japaneese. His unit got there close to the end of the fighting and when he mentioned this he almost had a tear in his eye. He said "not as many of them for me to kill".
