It's funny that Sony couldn't come up with a better name than "Psyc Network Walkman". For its time, "Walkman" was a brilliant name. "Playstation" is great. What the hell happened?

My money's on the Dilberts in engineering trying to be awesome hip ;)

Seriously though, I'm guessing that the product was probably named by people who are not native speakers of English, and somewhere along the line the impact of the original Japanese name was lost in translation. If you consider "Walkman" and "Playstation", they're quite literal in meaning (which leads me to believe that they could have been translated from Japanese words) and not nearly as sophisticated as "iPod". I'm sure "Psyc Network Walkman" sounds much better in Japanese. That said, I'm certain that Sir Howard would not have approved of such a mouthful.
