Thanks Frank .. but why would they put out the same announcement on the first and 10th
of March??? Maybe they have decided to placate M1 by republishing their press releases every 10 days???

.. Maybe because Apcon, their competitor in this space, announced a similar but inferior product on Feb. 1. apcon.com

.. and……. Maybe because this wasn’t ready yet…. mediacrossconnect.com

In other news of note from some obscure European website….

Alcatel wins order to update KPN's DSL network, terms undisclosed

PARIS (AFX) - Alcatel said it won an order from Royal KPN NV to update its DSL network. No financial details were available.

The upgrade will increase bandwidth for the end-user, Alcatel said, adding that it is the Dutch operator's first step towards triple-play.

KPN to make large investments in internet and ADSL telephony

DMEUROPE-3 March 2005-KPN to make large investments in internet and ADSL telephony ©2005 DMeurope.com (http://www.dmeurope.com) & DME Ltd. All rights reserved.

Dutch incumbent telco KPN has announced it is to make major investments over the coming years in voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP), the increasingly popular telephony service, and in a faster version of its ADSL broadband service - dubbed ADSL 2+.

The announcement was made by CEO Ad Scheepbouwer in the presentation of the company's 2004 and first-quarter figures.

KPN has seen the number of fixed-line calls made over the company's phone lines drop significantly over the last year in favour of cable-based internet telephony offered by cable operators, he said. Fixed-line revenues fell by 6.5 per cent last year to 7.2bn.

However, at the same time, KPN s ADSL connections doubled in 2004 to 1.4m, and also KPN increased its share in the entire Dutch broadband market (including cable) from 39 per cent to 44 per cent at the end of last year.

KPN is also considering offering an ADSL-only subscription to those who decide not to opt for fixed-line voice calls and just stick with their mobile service.

On the television and video front, KPN is planning to offer a delay TV service later this year, whereby subscribers can view an already-broadcast TV programme at a later time, and video-on-demand over high-speed ADSL.

In addition, KPN will also start mobile television trials in 2005 and extend its digital television coverage (DVB-T) over the next two years.

However, the move toward more internet-based services also comes at the same time as an announcement of 8,000 redundancies at KPN s fixed-line and mobile divisions and at its headquarters in The Hague. In an internet-based world, everything is cheaper and simpler, significantly reducing structural costs. This also means that our services can be delivered with significantly fewer people, said Mr Scheepbouwer.

KPN adds services with Nortel Ethernet solution

DMEUROPE-22 February 2005-KPN adds services with Nortel Ethernet solution ©2005 DMeurope.com (http://www.dmeurope.com) & DME Ltd. All rights reserved.

Dutch telco KPN is now offering data, voice and internet access services over a single, converged network with completion of the first phase of a nationwide Ethernet network deployment using metro Ethernet solutions from Canadian telecoms supplier Nortel.

The first-phase deployment was completed under a supply agreement with Nortel signed in October 2004. Under this agreement, KPN plans further evolution of its Ethernet service with the addition of offerings, integration with its existing IP (internet protocol) virtual private network (VPN) service and an international Ethernet-VPN (EVPN) service.

With the deployment, KPN is now able to offer 'point-to-point' and 'any-to-any' connectivity, multiple service classes, scaleable high-bandwidth fibre optic network access and national coverage.

Ethernet VPNs offer a solution to connect KPN's customers' locations nationally. By extending the Ethernet for local area network (LAN) standard to the wide area network (WAN), multiple customer locations can be connected through VPNs based on native Ethernet technology.

KPN's Ethernet service enables enterprises to integrate LANs at different locations using broadband connections scaleable from 10 Megabits per second up to 1 Gigabit per second. The company now has the ability to offer 10 Gigabit Ethernet-based services for specific customers.

These announcements may have some relevance to MRV’s business prospects in the immediate future….
