It's not still happening at an alarming rate. Modern minimum tillage practices leave the soil 60 to 80 percent covered with crop residue.

Back when they plowed in the fall and turned all the crop residue under, the blowing dirt would actually eat the lower 6' of power and phone poles. That's not happening now.
