That's an absolute necessity for a building 1000 years old located in earthquake country. My understanding is that work was done over ten years ago. It is also my understanding that the Arabs are very proud/respectful of the building's design and would not damage it intentionally.

I learned a little about this when in college I took a random class freshman year entitled "Issues in Biblical Civlization." It was one of the classes that turned me off to religion for good.
