the way the US can easily defend the currency is to jack interest rates aggressively. this will be the most effective way to reduce the trade deficit as it will kill the economy, causing a recession and thus a decline in imports. there would be massive unemployment and bankruptcies due to the profligate use of credit.

but, at least the dollar would go up :)
