If people power brings about Democracy, I doubt very much that those people will trade one form of despotism for another by going to a Taleban style government. However, if that were to happen, then the U.S. needs to respect the wishes of those countries to rule themselves as they please.

To really be a democracy you don't just have to have elections (and real ones not sham ones), you have to continue to have elections. If a facist or a communist or Taleban type gets himself elected and cancels all other elections than you aren't staying in a situation where the people of the country get to continue to rule themselves as they please.
