Well, there is a different dog for each family, of course. I just like Goldens because they are so extremely loving and happy and sweet. They are also very gentle and predictable and will watch tv with your children for hours and let them lie all over their bodies and tie ribbons around their ears and such.

Has your family had a dog? What kind?

I can tell you that Shelties are very complicated and brooding, probably good traits for being left on a wet deserted Scottish island through the winter with a flock of tiny sheep, but not so good for my family. Aside from the obvious annoyance of being herded every time we make a move, my Sheltie has never fully accepted Mr. Grainne as pack leader, and jumps and barks snarlingly whenever my husband tries to get close to me. Although he would never bite a family member, he did lunge at a poor Chinese food deliveryman who had to come into my bedroom to use the phone once. Shelties are very protective of their families, and rightly so, because they have to keep the wolves at the door or the flock will be decimated when the farmer comes back in the spring to check on it.
