Scott, Robert; The clones parasitised the high end because there was some kind of flat fee structure. If they had all disappeared and never been made I think Apple would at best have captured about 50% of those sales. Thus a gain for Apple, and a platform shrink.
Jobs and his crew are probably in the thick of talks with Umax et al, and doubtless experienced marketers have advised him of the flaws in the original clone license arrangement, and they may possibly evolve a clone royalty structure that gives each manufacturer a shot at each market segment, so Apple would get a portion of all segments and so would the cloners. So we now wait for the other shoe to drop, as Apple is certain to keep cloning alive for it's own good.
