Are you asserting that criticizing public figures is not common on the political threads at SI?

If you are, I would disagree, from my own observations. In fact, there are threads where people of one political persuasion or another are called names simply for supporting one political philosophy or another.

I assume everyone here is tough enough to defend their own political persuasion and its public figures.

Public figures have no right to expect to be treated deferentially or politely, at least in America. They lose most of the protections of private citizens.
