"Gray Owl" the movie was a yawner thezreview.co.uk that opened with Brosnan depicting a trapper miffed because he lost a beaver and a trap. (Good trappers rarely lose traps or beaver.)

Then Brosnan fell under the spell of a woman who objected to trapping. After swallowing her line, hook and sinker, Brosnan's character adopted the nom de plume "Gray Owl" and therafter crusaded against trapping.

In reality, trappers are explorers and conservationists, at one with their environment. nationaltrappers.com Two hundred years ago they opened up the West and helped the pioneers find their way into the new land. Now they are just quietly trying to ply their trade without interference from misguided do-gooders.

There was a real life Gray Owl, on whose "life" the movie is loosely based. He was in reality a Brit name of Archie Belaney, but he invented a false Ojibway Indian heritage and called himself Gray Owl in order to meddle in the lawful affairs of others.

Archie Belaney was much like Ward Churchill. He was a fraud. His cause was fraudulent. He is a metaphor for all lost causes whose proponents must lie and cheat to advance their point. Brosnan lost my respect when he chose to portray a fraudulent personage on the screen for money.

Some people object to trapping, but it is through ignorance that their arguments are sustained. I do not intend to debate the merits of trapping or defend my position against emotional diatribes of the sort that I received on the "Feelings" thread last year. I will simply ignore them.

Anyone interested in learning about trapping and its role in conservation should read "The Lochsa Story." amazon.com I know this story to be true. Its author is a legendary trapper and conservationist who has done more for the environment than a thousand Gray Owls. He never graduated from grade school but was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy by The University of Montana for his many accomplishments. He was featured as an authority in a National Geographic video "The Bear Wars", and was acknowledged as an expert in several of Norman Maclean's books "A River Runs Through It" and "Young Men and Fire" to name just two. He still hunts and traps.

My days spent trapping are among the finest of my life, and if I could do it again I would. Anybody who doesn't like it should get a life of their own.
