As for the Italian journalist's take I don't really give her version much credence. She also claimed there was a hail of gunfire, and even that the car came under attack from tanks.

In the meantime, the US Army knew that they were coming to the airport with the Italian journalist.

More interesting stuff surfaced. Besides the car also the 3 satellite phones used by the agent disappeared... They are believed to have been used to communicate the delivery of the ransom of between 6-8 million Euros and could have left traces of that if found.
And in the Roman senate Giuliano Amato while giving a speech about the incident suddenly picked up the subject of "riscatto" (ransom), where "we in this house agreed to buy free any of our citizens kidnapped should the need occur" and "if maybe this be something to reconsider for changes".
Now Italy is believed to have paid millions in ransom for the Italian hostages released so far including 3 body guards last year and the 2 women Simona Pari and Simona Toretta.
