Nadine, we all know that weapons sites under UN seal were thoroughly looted under the largely indifferent eyes of US troops. What I did not know was that sophisticated equipment capable of making nuclear weapons components was specifically targeted by the looters. That was the new and damning (for Bush) revelation in the NYT article.

Given that we knew exactly where such equipment was stored under UN seal, and given that the justification of the war was to prevent such equipment from falling into terrorist or unfriendly hands, the fact that Rumsfeld and Bush did not make their top priority securing such sites and providing adequate troops and special forces to do so constitutes, IMO, at least criminal negligence and perhaps treason.

The arguments that things were too chaotic to secure these sites and that Saddam's army disintegrated too quickly to do so are sorry excuses: the numerous oil wells around the country were properly secured even before the war began to prevent them from being blown up. If we did not have enough troops to secure the weapons sites as well, we should not have started the war.

The equipment stolen at the hands of Iran and Al Queda is much more dangerous than at the hands of Saddam. Iran is bigger, stronger and has a more capable scientific and engineering infrastructure than Saddam would have had in the foreseeable future, even without the UN sanctions.
