We saw an excellent movie last night. Everyday People. The funny thing is we also rented Flight of the Phoenix, which has to be one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. At 10X the budget (at least) of everyday people it managed to be stupid, and boring for every one of its excruciating 113 minutes.

Everyday People (2004)
Starring: Jordan Gelber, Bridget Barkan
Director: Jim McKay
Synopsis: The closing of a Brooklyn restaurant concerns a number of employees and guests who've found a second home in the neighborhood eatery.
Runtime: 91 minutes
MPAA Rating: Not Rated
Genres: Drama,Indie

The writing in Everyday People is absolutely first rate. ANd it has some of the most nuanced racial issues I've ever seen in a movie. It's much more complex than the blurb above would make you think. Subjects touched upon include dealing with loss, the foster system, siblings, the conflict successful blacks can have with other blacks who see them as sell outs, ex cons, Jewish/black tensions, and on and on.

Great movie, and not a bad performance in it.
