The response to the looming flu pandemic has been scandalously poor at almost all levels, from defining the diseases, to monitoring the virus, to preparing a vaccine.

Significant resources need to be allocated, although at this time it is VERY late. The pandemic preparedness in 2005 is only slightly better than it was in 1918.

In some respects its worse, because monitoring the pandemic is really like watching a train wreck. The two trains are heading toward each other on the same track. The only real question is how fast they will be moving when they hit.

In 1918 there were no trains to watch. The pandemic seemed to come out of nowhere. Today the trains are clearly visible and each day they are closer. Lately they have been picking up speed.
