I think it's a wiring difference, so I'm not sure sophistication has much to do with it. Remember the "God spot" in the brain? Folks with wiring for that to fire often probably can't help being religious, and it may actually impair them when they try to be scientists. So the wiring may be what prevents them from being scientists, just as scientists may not be able to claim any credit for being the way they are (save for crediting their genetics for giving them the wiring that made them what they are).
