"common knowledge......"

Common knowledge it might be, but there seems to be a dearth of actual facts. There is one poll that is is bandied about, but it dates back to 1980. I dunno, things might have changed in the intervening 25 years. Going to the Media Research Center, they claim
The most recent ASNE study surveyed 1,037 newspaper reporters found 61 percent identified themselves as/leaning "liberal/Democratic" compared to only 15 percent who identified themselves as/leaning "conservative/Republican."

However, the ASNE has different numbers, which sort of casts some doubt on the MRC.

Newsroom Reporter Editor ME/AME Editor
Democrat 25 27 25 20
Lean towards Democrat 28 28 29 28
Independent 17 17 16 23
Republican 6 5 8 5
Lean towards Republican 9 8 9 10
Libertarian 2 1 2 3
No party affiliation 13 14 11 11

So the only support for the 10-1 margin is from a study that was done 25 years ago...
