Here in Silicon Valley, I see a Prius or two every time I go out. They are fashionable here.

Also 4 or 5 S-class Mercedes, bunch of SUVs, Porsches, etc.
Even saw the new Lotus Elise today - at McDonald's.

Car are something of a fashion accesory for about 25% of people living here.

If gas prices went to $3.50 a gallon, many of those people wouldn't even notice.

Just up the road in Menlo Park is a Chevy dealer who is the largest seller of Corvettes west of the Mississippi, and the # 3 seller of Chevy Suburbans.

Trying to sell these people a tin can isn't going to work. They might even spend big money having a classic car restored, get a gray market import, or spend the money on something else.

If the federal government mandates significantly higher fuel economy standards, Detroit is going to have real problems trying to sell to this very profitable market segment.

Southern California is even more car crazy.
