<<<China needs to get over itself>> ... why?>
To avoid a military conflagration, great amount of death and destruction, economic disaster and general mayhem and carnage.
Three down, one more to go? Hong Kong was a done deal due to lease expiry. Tibet's conquest was long ago during Mao's maelstrom and Buddhist defences were not robust, with a land border, no prospect of third party intervention, or even interest.
The advantage of a militaristic aggressive and hostile approach to Taiwan seems to me to be the prospect of developing a jingoistic mindless nationalistic fervour in Hu Jintao's serfs to avoid internal problems. It works! Look how Adolf got them going at Nuremberg and so on. People love a good rally, with singing, marching and bonding, us against them, self-righteousness, self-belief and most importantly of all, an atavistic desire for alpha-maledom and territorial tribal dominance, just like chimps.
Chinese are quite like chimps. Look at them! All gangly arms, prehensile fingers, grins like monkeys, aggression, 98% DNA match and a lot more besides. Taiwanese are quite like chimps too. So are Japanese. Not to mention Koreans, Americans, Kiwis [human variety], Australians, Russians, Iranians, Syrians, Israelis, Lebanese, Palestinians, Venezuelans and Chechens.
Since we are all basically in the same cage these days, with no bars between the different alpha male tribal groups, there's potential for quite a commotion.
Since many of the chimps are armed with noocular weapons, cruise missiles, submarines, supersonic aircraft and all sorts of destructive technology, there is scope for very grand scale carnage.
WWIII could be a really beauty. A war to end all wars, to be followed as in the first war to end all wars with a hefty dose of H5N1 to help clear the air [and a lot more besides].
It's true that the chimps might not actually pull the trigger. But with the assassination of the Archduke by some Serbian, things got underway. lib.byu.edu Note that the archduke was to supervise some manoeuvres. I wonder who will supervise the Chinese/Russian [currently on-hold] manoeuvres? Hu Jintao might swing by to inspect the troops.
<progression towards the inevitable > Jay, are you really still so young and gullible to think in terms of "the inevitable" in such matters.
