To imply that the existence of Israel or our support for Israel is somehow responsible for 9/11 is to say that oil is less important than Israel. We could go over lots of old ground and get hung up in many details. But it might be useful to point out that the Arabs inhabiting Palestine at the time Israel was created left with the notion that as soon as Israel was declared a state that their Arab brothers would overrun the Jews and drive them into the sea. When that did not happen, they were stuck. The surrounding states refused to assimilate them and they were not permitted to return. And ever since then they have not only wanted to go back to a particular place, they have wanted to go back in time. As Fillmore seems to believe, it has been Israel who has blocked a resolution to this issue all these years by refusing to return to pre-1967 borders. This is a silly simplistic and myopic view. There are not only significant numbers of Israelis who support the return to 1967 borders, but this objective had no chance as long as Arafat was alive. Even as he was shaking hands with Rabin, the PLO charter still called for the elimination of Israel and did not recognize it as a state. In fact, as far as I know,the PLO has never simply and publicly and unequivocally acknowledged the existence of Israel. The 1967 border issue is also not simply about land. It is about water. Think about that for a minute. This little back and forth we are having is also moot for another singificant reason, the simple demographics of Israel are that the Arab birth rate is far higher than that of jewish Israelis. In time, they will outnumber jews in their own land. Then we will see just what they and jewish Israelis are really made of.
