"Where do you get your statistics for this? " Statistics? none. Just the inkling I get when talking to people who want a gun in the house. They generally believe it would give them the edge and that presenting a gun would be enough for the bad guy to back down. The test comes with the, "and what if he doesn't," question. If the gun owner unflinchingly declares, 'one less bad guy to clean up after!!!' ... well, OK then. My attitude is that if you have pulled a gun, you should be 100% committed to using it according to its design. If not, you may be in trouble. "Crooks are usually losers (druggies frequently) looking for a soft target. That makes perfect sense to me. That is why I don't leave my keys in the car. Most are looking for an easy and low risk opportunity. Likewise, in that case, the presentation of a gun (bluffing or not) would probably be all it takes to be rid of the perp. I was thinking more of the hard core types, who can be very good at testing the resolve of their victims.
